When Did Jewelry Become Popular in Hip Hop?

Hip hop, known for infectious beats and mind-bending lyrics, has become synonymous with brand-name clothing and expensive jewelry. Hip hop artists display their wealth and success by wearing diamond-encrusted jewelry and fashion accessories, such as earrings, watches, pendants, belts and grills.

History

In 1979, the Sugar Hill Gang released the first Top 40 hip hop single, "Rapper's Delight." Sugar Hill Gang members and dancers wore basic athletic fashions that allowed them to display acrobatic dance moves on New York City streets. In 1983, Run D.M.C., and later Big Daddy Kane, were the first in a succession of rappers to incorporate chunky gold chains and medallions as part of their stage costumes.

Effects

Hip hop artists' interest in collecting and displaying expensive jewelry has caused some problems. Artists routinely report robberies and invest in high-tech security systems to protect their investments. In 2005, the rapper Cam'ron was shot in an attempted robbery while wearing $200,000 worth of jewelry around his neck in Washington, D.C.

Significance

Artists such as 50 Cent, Lil' John and Kanye West appear publicly wearing fine jewelry produced by high-end European craftsmen. For male hip hop fans, jewelry fever is spreading. In 2010, "Time" magazine reported that men's purchases of jewelry for themselves had doubled since 2007.

B.o.B. Headlining Concert For President Obama

B.o.B. has just been named the featured performer for President Obama’s Gen44 Summit Kick Off concert.“I’m performing for Obama for a function that he’s having. I’m bringing out a band and everything,” B.o.B told Shade 45’s Angela Yee. “It’s basically a concert for the President of the United States. I actually didn’t say anything or speak to anybody about it, because I didn’t believe it at first.”
The concert will take place on September 30th at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC and will be the opening event for the Gen44 Summit. The summit is organized by the Democratic National Committee, and described as “a three-day gathering of the next generation of leaders.”

Gucci Mane Releases Track-listing For His Upcoming Album

Gucci Mane posted the tracklisting to his upcoming album The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted to his blog yesterday.
Swizz makes two guest spots on trapper’s album, one being the current single “Gucci Time.” Nicki Minaj, Pharrell, Bun B, Estelle and Wyclef also all make appearances.

Drake and Nicki Minaj confirm marriage via Twitter

Singers Drake and Nicki Minaj are officially married. Drake, also known as Aubrey Graham tweeted confirmation of his marriage to Nicki Minaj.
"Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham," read Drake's Twitter account. "U scurred? @drakkardnoir u ready to make the announcement or wha?" Minaj tweeted on Friday afternoon.
Drake replied, "Baby I am never scared. PROUD is more the word I would use," before tweeting, "Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham and don't stare at her too long. She's finally mine. :)."
Nikki Minaj tweeted her own confirmation to followers stating, "Yes, its true. Drake and I tied the knot."
Speculation about the couple rose upon the release of Drake's single 'Miss Me.' Lyrics of the song included the lines, "I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I'd admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we f---ing did it/ And girl, I'm f---ing serious/ I'm with it if you with it/ 'Cause your verses turn me on, and your pants are mighty fitted," the former 'Degrassi' star sings.
For awhile it seemed that Drake believed this day would never come. In June the Toronto rapper told MTV, "I've always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she's always just looked at me as, like, her little brother," said Drake of Minaj.

In her latest video, Kat Stacks puts Soulja Boy on blast by providing “proof” that the 20-year-old ATL rapper loves him some blow.
The video starts with Kat Stacks in a hotel room bathroom talking into a mirror while a bathrobe barely covers her fake breasts. Right from the jump Kat claims that Soulja Boy is a cokehead. She then proceeds to walk into the dining area of the hotel room and sure enough on the sideboard are a few lines of what looks like that White Girl.
And just when you’re realizing that Soulja Boy hasn’t been seen or heard at all and you’re starting to doubt her story, the video cuts to a recorded phone conversation between the two, along with what looks like a series of private messages sent by Soulja Boy on Twitter.

Cut to camera phone video of her on a bed watching television next to some dude who, all we see of him are his scalp and a gang of tattoos that look like Soulja Boy’s inkings.
You never get a clear shot of the guy’s face, because Kat Stacks is a grimy chick and knows if these dudes caught her videotaping them, she probably would need reconstructive surgery on that face of hers.
